Pruitt Will Be Waived

By: Greg Payne

From the Herald:

After spending two seasons with the Celtics, point guard Gabe Pruitt will be waived by the team tonight, according to a league source.

The Celtics had until tomorrow to pick up the option on the final year of his contract worth approximately $900,000, but declined. Pruitt, a highly skilled point guard from USC, never managed to crack Doc Rivers’ rotation – in part because the C’s coach often questioned Pruitt’s aggressiveness.

Pruitt also upset members of management in February when he was arrested for driving under the influence in Los Angeles the night after the team signed Stephon Marbury as a back-up point guard. But Pruitt impressed coaches with a relatively strong performance in the Orlando Summer League earlier this month.

Pruitt played in just 62 games in his two seasons, averaging 2.0 points.

The decision comes as the C’s face a number crunch as they attempt to clear roster space for free agent swingman Marquis Daniels. Pruitt’s departure may also enhance rookie guard Lester Hudson’s chance of making the team. The C’s second-round draft pick is currently unsigned and recovering from finger surgery.

Can't say this is surprising news. We were pretty much certain this would happen. It's tough to say we'll miss you Gabe, simply because we saw so little of you. But you never wish ill on any player, so I wish him luck in finding a new home and continuing his NBA career.

Bruce Bowen is a Free Agent

From the Bucks' Twitter:

The Milwaukee Bucks have requested waivers on guard/forward Bruce Bowen, General Manager John Hammond announced today.

How do you feel about Bruce Bowen? Would you support a reunion with the Celtics?

Leon Powe's Wish List (And Boston's Not on It)

Here's the latest on Leon's situation from RealGM:

The unrestricted free agent is interested in playing for the Cavaliers and Magic, with Cleveland reportedly first on his list. The Mavericks and Lakers have also inquired about the forward's services.

The most optimistic scenario for Powe would be a return to the court in February.

And this update comes from Brian Windhorst:

Source says Cavs have made a contract offer to Leon Powe. He is ahead of schedule in recovery. He may have some other choices, we'll see.

Expect Something to Happen Today

By: Greg Payne

So basically the Celtics have until the end of the day to pick up Gabe Pruitt's option and as the Globe reported on Wednesday, it's unlikely to happen.

So basically by the end of today, either Pruitt's option won't be picked up or he'll be involved in some sort of transaction (most likely not the Marquis Daniels one, which we're still waiting on).

I don't think anyone would have thought that Glen Davis would sit around through the entire months of June and July, but the longer he stays available, the better chance we have of picking him up. Lamar Odom signing with the Lakers was really the last big name out there.

Hakim Warrick hitting the free agent market also hurts Davis' chances, but so far, it seems like Cleveland, Philadelphia and Milwaukee are the top teams in the Warrick sweepstakes.

Either way, by the end of today, I firmly anticipate something to have happened. I'm sure when I arrive home around 3:45 p.m. today, I'll flip open my laptop and go, "Woah".

Source: Lamar Odom will return to the Los Angeles Lakers - ESPN: "Free agent forward Lamar Odom will return to the Los Angeles Lakers, an NBA source said Thursday.
One source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com the four-year deal is worth $33 million if the Lakers exercise the final season.

Odom
One source close to the process said Odom will come away with a guaranteed $27 million from the new contract, matching the original value of the three-year, $27 million deal Lakers owner Jerry Buss pulled off the table earlier this month."

Deciphering Rasheed Wallace

By: Greg Payne

Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News has a nice piece on Rasheed Wallace. Here's an excerpt, but you should check out the whole thing:

He's an enigma wrapped inside a riddle and embraces it. He's unapologetically authentic. He used to play the Isley Brothers in the locker room and can quote Sun Tzu.

The outspoken person and unselfish teammate are worlds apart, which is what made him so coveted this offseason. Orlando, Cleveland, San Antonio and Boston made overtures for the forward, 34.

For all of Wallace's complexities, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge and players Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce flew to Detroit to recruit him. They know he's worth the trouble.

His issues with the refs or coaches cost his teams in the playoffs, some say. The facts shout something else. In the past 10 years, Wallace's teams have been in the conference finals seven times ... more than Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan.
I suppose we all knew we were getting a complicated person. But maybe an opportunity like next season will be enough to bring out the player we all know he can be.

Ads on Practice Jerseys?

By: Greg Payne

Oh, how the corporate market continues to mutate:

Beginning this season the NBA will let teams sell ads on their practice jerseys, says deputy commissioner Adam Silver, who adds the league is continuing to explore the issue of ads on game jerseys.

"We are operating a diverse business all around the world," Silver says. "(The sponsored game jersey) is a well-established practice in other countries. Ultimately, I think our fans will come to accept it."

Um...who actually sees the practice jerseys? The personnel of the team selling the jersey to the advertiser? Say the Celtics sell an ad to Nike (hypothetically speaking) and only team employees see the ads. Are they just advertising to their own people?

Will they be aimed at the players? Are these going to be like, super duper, Incredible Hulk-like ads, giving the dish on items like Ferraris and mansions that might appeal to NBA superstars? I mean, you and I will not be seeing these ads on a regular basis, unless Comcast SportsNet suddenly runs a, "Let's look in on the Celtics' most recent practice in Waltham" feature on every pre-game show.

AND HOLD ON! Aren't we the team that complains practically every single day that we never have ENOUGH practice time? Whether it's a steady compilation of home and away back to backs or the need to rest our aging legs, or whatever else, we probably won't even practice enough to warrant such a move. We'd probably be robbing the poor advertisers in the end, unless the gym bags and closets the jerseys will be stuffed in for much of the season can suddenly pull an Optimus Prime and transform into a walking, independent being and go out and buy stuff on their own.

Well, whatever works for them. As long as it doesn't interfere with us winning, they can do what they want.

Celtics and Cavs to Meet in First Game of Upcoming Season

Ball Don't Lie has the latest on the first night of next season:

As of now, the Cavs are penciled in to host the Celtics at The Q on Tuesday, Oct. 27, which is likely the first night of the season.

Rambling About the Latest Headlines

(CBTC)

By: Greg Payne

Let's ramble a bit, shall we?

Where is Marquis Daniels? Why hasn't any deal been executed yet? Why is he not officially a member of the Boston Celtics? Last Friday Marc Spears reported that a decision between the Celtics and Pacers would be made by the "end of the week". Maybe he meant this week?

I know Daniels has verbally committed to the Celtics, but that doesn't mean he can't back out of such a promise. Sure, we'd loathe him for it, but he can still technically do it. Maybe there's really nothing to worry about at all. But we keep talking about him as a member of the Boston Celtics, but in reality, he's still just a free agent.

I think the majority of us were hopeful that we would see the end of the Tony Allen period in Boston with this whole Daniels thing, but, because of his various off the court issues, they seem unwilling to take him on. Darn. That would have been an absolute steal. Not exactly Russell for the Ice Capades, but it's a pretty big deal when we can jettison one of our worst bench players in exchange for a high quality veteran poised to help make a run at a championship.

I love how people assume because Danny Ainge and Larry Bird are buddies, Bird will automatically do us a solid and give us Daniels in a great deal. BUT, people must be forgetting that Bird still has his own team to run and has been trying to re-create the entire image of that franchise since The Brawl, so I can absolutely understand him not wanting Allen.

Speaking of making a run at a championship, it appears Ainge might be attempting to move anyone and everyone who won't readily contribute next season.

Gabe Pruitt's tenure is essentially over. Bill Walker isn't safe (J.R. Giddens can't be, either) and there can be no doubt the team would ship out TA if a reasonable offer came their way.

A team can only carry 12 healthy bodies into the postseason, but that doesn't necessarily have to stop Ainge from compiling a team full of vets ,while letting men 11-15 essentially duke it out the entire season for the right to compete in the postseason. That way, we're sure we have the best team possible heading into the 'real' season.

As of right now, our first eight will be: Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, Rasheed Wallace, Eddie House and (hopefully) Marquis Daniels. That makes for a very, very solid eight man rotation as is, but we clearly need to keep adding more pieces. Maybe Glen Davis will make a return. After Davis, if we can add at least one more suitable role player, we'll arguably have the best 10-man rotation in all of basketball. We already possess the best starting five in basketball, so why not add on five more?

With moves both teams have made and in light of the transactions still to come, I'm willing to say that San Antonio comes the closest to matching us, purely from a talent stand point, with their additions of Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess.

...Jamaal Tinsley, anyone, yet? Anyone? Anyone at all?

Pruitt May Be Done in Boston

By: Greg Payne

The Globe reports that Gabe Pruitt's tenure as a Boston Celtic could very well be coming to a close:

Gabe Pruitt has not had many chances to perform when it counts for the Celtics. And Pruitt, who has played 461 minutes in 62 games in two seasons, might not get another opportunity with the team.

An NBA source confirmed yesterday the Celtics are attempting to trade Pruitt, whose option deadline is Friday. The Celtics are leaning toward not picking up Pruitt’s option, which would leave the guard free to sign with another team.

Pruitt is unlikely to be used as part of a sign-and-trade deal involving Indiana guard Marquis Daniels, since the Pacers have three point guards. A three-team trade involving Pruitt also is unlikely, a league source said.

That last bit is both significant and interesting. What type of player will the Celtics attempt to acquire for Pruitt? Will he be part of a deal to acquire a veteran point guard? Will the Celtics consider shipping him to a young team, laden with a wily vet who could actually help the C's? Minnesota just did that by shipping Etan Thomas to the Thunder in exchange for Chucky Atkins. Maybe the Celtics are hoping to travel down a similar path.

Personally, I'm still adamant that they need a power forward who prefers to play in the paint and maybe a team out there has such a player.

Allen's Off the Courst Issues Holding up Daniels Deal

By: Greg Payne

It appears as if Tony Allen's off the court issues and not his talent (lack of?) level are what's holding up a potential sign-and-trade with former Indiana swingman Marquis Daniels, according to the Boston Herald:

The Pacers, beset by past citizenship issues, reportedly are reluctant to bring in Allen. The guard’s offcourt issues, including death threats in Chicago that required extra bench security during last spring’s playoffs, cut against the grain of Pacers president Larry Bird’s attempt to move away from the legacy of Ron Artest and Jamaal Tinsley.

Let's not count our chicks before they hatch, okay? Daniels is not officially a member of the Boston Celtics and verbal confirmations cannot make it so. Boston and Indiana are still looking for a third team to help complete the deal and are willing to part with Bill Walker in order to make the deal complete.

Updates, Updates, Updates

Here's the latest from the Herald on the Marquis Daniels business:

The Celtics’ attempt to sign free agent Marquis Daniels - a deal they have attempted to facilitate with a sign-and-trade arrangement with Indiana - has hit a snag.

The Pacers are reportedly dissatisfied with what the Celtics are offering - with the primary bait said to be guard Tony Allen and possibly Gabe Pruitt.

As a result, according to a source close to negotiations, the Celtics and Indiana are now searching for a third team to make the trade work.

And as for Leon Powe receiving an offer from the Cavs, Bob Finnan, a beat writer from Cleveland, posted on his Twitter that no such offer has been made.

The Herald also reports that no talks have surfaced between Boston and New Jersey, regarding a sign-and-trade with Glen Davis and Yi Jianlian.

Though the Celtics have attempted to include restricted free agent Glen Davis in several sign-and-trade deals with other teams, sources with the Celtics and New Jersey both shot down a rumor this morning that both teams were attempting to make such an arrangement work.
Oh, these rumors. When so many are shot down, you almost have to wonder where these "sources" are actually getting their information. Oh well, I suppose it causes for some talk and debate if nothing else.

Rumors, Rumors, Rumors...Sources?

(DGA Productions)

By: Greg Payne

So there are a ton of rumors flying around right now, with the majority of them being reported by Celticsblog.

Clicking on that link will send you there and give you all of the gory details, but essentially, here's a simple breakdown, seeing as their source isn't named anywhere.

  • The Celtics and Bruce Bowen appear to have mutual interest.
  • Apparently a sign-and-trade with the New Jersey Nets involving Glen Davis and Yi Jianlian is nearly imminent.
  • Since Drew Gooden has agreed in principle to sign with the Mavericks, Leon Powe is close to accepting an offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers. If the Cavs are in fact chasing Leon, they are being very Red Auerbach-esque, as often some of Red's best players were former opponents who had at one time torched his squad in one way or another.
Celticsblog has become a credible website, but I personally won't be sold until I see some actual sources revealed. In my opinion, guys like Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc Spears seem to have the best sources and are always the ones who break news like that mentioned above. So, don't panic just yet and don't think any of the deals mentioned are bound to happen. Let's wait for the journalists and newspapers to follow up at this point and confirm some of them.

Oh How the "F-Bombs" Will Fly This Season

(DGA Productions)

By: Greg Payne

Kevin Garnett certainly appears to be a very complex human being. Maybe that goes without saying.

On the one side we have the astute family man, supportive teammate and generous charity supporter. Just ask the victims of Hurricane Katrina who benefited from Garnett's 1.2 million dollar donation (out of his own pocket) back in 2005.

But on the other side, we have the ferocious beast, embodying a man possessed on the basketball court. Along with that ferociousness comes a rather distinct display or profanity and malediction, that has garnered an entire national spotlight of its own. When it's time to take the court, Garnett becomes the king of curses, the sultan of swears and the baron of blaspheme.

Now, as Boston fans we revel in it. Whether or not that says much about us as a people is a whole other matter. But the Garden's never louder than when Garnett is on his hands and knees, barking at an opponent attempting to drive the lane, or when his verbal tongue lashings of officials and opponents can be heard all the way up in the balcony. The crowd simply feeds off of it, like a pack of hungry wolves devouring a thick steak.

But, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Garnett might have just met his match.

Enter Rasheed Wallace: The newest Boston Celtic and the only player in the NBA capable of keeping up with the many curses of Kevin Garnett. Ironically, they're also best friends. Coincidence? I think not. And now, they are teammates.

Sure, Kevin Garnett was bad enough on his own, just like Fulton Reed in The Mighty Ducks. But pair Reed with Dean Portman and suddenly you have the Bash Brothers. Those Icelanders didn't stand a chance. Well, pair Garnett with Wallace and you could be looking at the Blaspheme Brothers. After all, Wallace still holds the NBA single-season record for technical fouls with 41, during the 2000-2001 season. That's a technical every other game! It should be mentioned that most of Wallace's technicals come off of heavy, expletive-laced tirades against the much shorter officials.

The Garden will surely be rockin' this coming season. But we'll have to give it a test run (say a week or two), before possibly considering some sort of age limit, as the profanity level is sure to rise faster than the previously dead corpses in 28 Weeks Later. Surely as the F-Bombs reverberate through the rafters like an angry horde of mosquitoes, some noble mother will personify Maude Flanders and protest: "Won't somebody please think of the children!"

Sorry, lady, but this is about winning. And if a steady stream of swear words helps bring us Banner 18, you can be sure we'll put up with it. After all, we're from the very city that films like The Departed (make that The Depahted) and Boondock Saints were set in. Have you watched those recently? Every other word is (expletive). It's nearly pointless showing such films on cable television, as every other word has to be dubbed out.

And watching the games on television won't provide any solace, either. It'll be like watching a very profane basketball movie. Picture an R-rated Hoosiers, with Jimmy Chitwood talking smack to the Southbend Bears every chance he gets.

And it's not like children haven't been exposed to NBA-related profanity before. Just ask Eddie House's son, who's a more prominent figure on the court than even Gabe Pruitt.

Rick Reilly recently wrote about the many tantrums of Tiger Woods. Well, if he was that disgusted with Tiger Woods throwing around a nine iron every once in a while, can we please get him some tickets directly behind the Celtics bench next season? Then, sir, you will have a column.

The NBA even sometimes hooks up microphones to certain players, Kobe Bryant often being a popular choice. Um...have they ever mic'ed up KG or 'Sheed? I didn't think so. Actually, idea for a new Spike Lee project: KG and 'Sheed Doin' Work. Just think of the possibilities!

And will the pair of them going at it have any effect on the rest of their teammates? Will this smattering of curses become so enticing that even Brian Scalabrine gets in on the act? Could next season's Celtics be dubbed, "The Boston Bad Boys" and put the late '80s/early '90s' Pistons to shame?

Picture the most popular kid in class suddenly daring to stand up to the establishment smack dab in the middle of a lesson. Naturally, everyone else, sans the teacher's pet, will immediately have his/her back and get in a few quick jabs of their own before the higher officials within the administration are forced to intervene.

But despite the many inevitable interventions, one thing about next season remains quite clear: It's going to be (expletive) awesome.

Lamar Odom Close to Signing With Miami

(DGA Productions)
By: Greg Payne

Some good news from the Los Angeles Times:

Odom has not reached a final decision, the sources said, but there is growing belief he will ultimately return to the Heat unless the Lakers improve their current offer. “It’s close, but it’s not done,” said one source.

Obviously anything at breaks up the Odom-LA tandem benefits every other contender in the league and leaves the Lakers with, not necessarily a gaping hole, but a significant gap in their lineup. They will obviously lose an extremely versatile player, capable of guarding multiple positions and him leaving would dampen their overall talent level in general.

Let's see what his final decision is. As Spike Lee would say: Do the right thing!

Kevin Garnett is a Wheaties Consultant

(DGA Productions)

KG could be keeping a classic alive:

Now General Mills is embarking on a multimillion-dollar effort to put more muscle in the Wheaties brand. On Thursday, the company is announcing that it will introduce a second variety, Wheaties Fuel. All the marketing will be aimed at men — a first, by all accounts, in the cereal aisle.

Testosterone swirls around every aspect of Wheaties Fuel’s introduction. General Mills — maker of the most popular brand, Cheerios, and the second-largest cereal manufacturer, behind Kellogg’s — used a panel of only male athletes, including the Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and the Boston Celtics power forward Kevin Garnett, to consult on both the nutritional profile and flavor.

I've never been too big on Wheaties, but hey, if KG said they was good, I'd listen. And if he appeared on a box, I might just be compelled to buy one.

Griz Rescind Offer to Warrick

I was surprised by two things this morning.

First, the Grizzlies withdrew their $3 million qualifying offer to power forward Hakim Warrick. I really believed Warrick was one of their key pieces moving forward, who could either produce frequently on the court or be used as trade bait.

Second, I'm honestly shocked that the offer was only for $3 million. I suppose I figured Warrick would have asked for more and the Grizzlies would have obliged. So, Warrick's available, huh? We MIGHT want to keep the lines of communication with his camp open, just in case this whole Glen Davis thing doesn't work out.

Just putting it out there.

Marbury Has Offer?

Two weeks ago, it appeared Marbury's Celtic career was done when Danny Ainge told him he couldn't do a deal. But that changed this week and Marbury has a Celtic offer.

Decision on Daniels By the End of the Week

By: Greg Payne

I was actually just thinking to myself, "Hey, Marquis Daniels isn't actually on our roster yet", when I found this from Marc Spears:

The
Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers will likely decide by the end of the week whether guard Marquis Daniels(notes) will receive Boston’s $1.99 million biannual exception or come to the team via a sign-and-trade deal. A sign-and-trade would allow the Celtics to save their biannual exception and potentially give Daniels a higher salary. Based on salary, Boston guard Tony Allen(notes) could be the best option (he’ll make $2.5 million this season) to go to Indiana in a sign-and-trade.

Now, when he says the end of the week, does he mean the end of the work week (as in today, Friday) or the end of the actual week (as in Sunday)?

Indiana can't possibly be that stupid, right? Surely they won't take on arguably our worst player in exchange for a more versatile and more efficient wing player we can sorely use to help bolster our bench? Hey, maybe Larry's just doing us a solid. We'll have to see.

Indiana Happy to Say Farewell to Jamaal Tinsley

By: Greg Payne

I decided to do a little digging in an attempt to find out more about Jamaal Tinsley. Let me preface this by saying that I have no idea whether or not the Celtics are even remotely interested in his services. I'm not breaking any news or starting any rumors. All I know is, we need a backup point guard and Tinsley can play. And the veteran's minimum might just be the perfect salary for him.

Now, he certainly wasn't on the Pacers' Christmas list for the past two seasons or so, but if you recall, last season's backup point guard, Stephon Marbury, also left his pre-Celtic team on rather poor terms. So it's not like we haven't been there before. But this isn't about Stephon. This is about Jamaal. So, as I continued to dig, I wasn't surprised to find some less than flattering comments from some of the Indianapolis newspapers.

Consider this harvest of hatred from the Indianapolis Star's Bob Kravitz:

Jamaal Tinsley, one of the most maddening players in Pacers history, is gone.

And his half-hearted play on the floor only strengthened the perception of Tinsley as a guy who didn't particularly care.

And every year, Tinsley was driving his coaches crazy, to the point that O'Brien insisted that Tinsley be sent into hoops exile.

In the end, Tinsley outmaneuvered the Pacers by doing absolutely nothing, by sitting on his backside and collecting paychecks.

Now, I'm not trying to attack Mr. Kravtiz by any stretch of the imagination. I'm not even disagreeing with him. I'm just trying to point out the apparent perception the people of Indiana have of Tinsley.

Let's check in with Kent Sterling:

two things are very true about Jamaal Tinsley - his presence was a hinderance to ticket sales, and he could not be counted on to play regularly. I don't know how many sinus infections the guy had, but it was more than any ten people I know combined. Jamaal spent a lot of time on the bench or behind it.

Exactly zero season ticket holders had any interest in seeing Tinsley on the court or the bench, and they pay the freight.

Not exactly Hallmark quality, but as I recall, there was some pretty nasty stuff said about Stephon Marbury before he joined the ranks last season.

But Sterling also offered this:

There are cities where the Tinsleys of the world can flourish. Indianapolis is not among them. This has nothing to do with race, but with culture.

Well, Boston's got that culture thing down pretty well at this point, for what it's worth. But in general, the people of Indiana were happy to say farewell to their formerly disgruntled point guard. And, if he clears waivers within seven days, he'll be up for grabs on the free market, no longer hog tied behind the Pacer bench.

I'm not saying we will or even should pursue this guy. I'm just saying we can't count out any possibilities.

Jamaal Tinsley, Anyone?

(Rajon Rondo still needs a backup. Steve Neimand)

By: Greg Payne

I'm going to elaborate more on this later, but let me drop the idea for now.

Yesterday, the Pacers waived Jamaal Tinsley, making him a free agent.

With Rasheed Wallace and Marquis Daniels now in the picture, and Glen Davis hopefully joining them soon, the priority for Danny Ainge has to have shifted somewhat to finding a suitable backup to Rajon Rondo.

Sure, rumors regarding Stephon Marbury's return have begun swirling, and many of us have dropped Tyronn Lue's name as a hopeful signee, but so far it has remained all quiet on the backup point guard front.

Well, signing a guy like Tinsey would certainly be cause for some noise. I'm not yet saying the Celtics should even speak with the man or his agent and I'm not even remotely sold on him yet. I'm just throwing out the possibility.

His legal troubles have been well documented and the injury bug hasn't been kind to him over the past three or four seasons, but when he's healthy, he's perfectly capable of posting a double-double of the points-assists variety.

Couple that with the Celtics' strange, yet efficient knack for taking on troubled young athletes and transforming the majority of them back into legitimate professionals and maybe this idea doesn't seem too outlandish (Marbury was a model citizen, wasn't he?).

All I know is, we need a backup point guard before this season kicks off, and if Gabe Pruitt doesn't have the confidence of the coaching staff yet, how exactly is that going to change in a matter of two or three months? He might not even be on the roster come October. So, if Tinsley can help us (he has the ability to), I'd at least be open to a discussion.

He and Rasheed didn't exchange blows during The Brawl at the Palace, right?

Don't Count Marbury in Just Yet...

Marc Spears just posted the following on Twitter:

Recent report that Stephon Marbury could return to Celtics was news to him. He said he had nothing strong going on with anyone right now.

Here was that original report:

A source tells NES247 that Stephon Marbury will be returning to Boston, possibly for the bi-annual exception, before the end of August. Marbury is still playing the waiting game to see what other teams have to offer, but he intends on returning to Boston and Ainge has already given him a contract offer.

Now I know you guys are thinking: where’s the link to the other news source? There isn’t one, this information is exclusive to NES247. Marbury will be in green next season playing backup to Rondo. You heard it here first.

I'm torn. Half of me says, 'Yeah, re-sign him and give him a full training camp'. But the other side of me says, 'Been there, done that. Find someone else'. I'm leaning towards the latter right now. Either way, it doesn't sounds imminent by any stretch of the imagination.

Your Daily Big Baby Update and a Mixed Offering

By: Greg Payne

It's really quick, I promise. The New Jersey Nets are now interested in Glen Davis, according to Yahoo! Sports and now the Globe.

Now this, from the New York Post:

Several Nets sources confirmed the team's interest in Davis, but all agreed the chances of landing the Celtics restricted free agent are unlikely.

BUT, I did find this interesting. Here's what Marc Spears reported yesterday:

Boston did offer Davis and guards
J.R. Giddens(notes) and Gabe Pruitt(notes) to the Pistons for forward Jason Maxiell(notes) and a first-round pick, but was quickly turned down.

And here's what Frank Dell'Apa of the Globe wrote today:
The
yahoo.com report indicated the Pistons offered a sign-and-trade deal that would have sent Davis, J.R. Giddens, and Gabe Pruitt to Detroit in exchange for Jason Maxiell and a first-round pick but the Celtics declined.

So who exactly did the offering? I'm tempted to say the Pistons took the initiative here, because I honestly can't see Ainge giving up those three guys for just Maxiell and a draft pick, especially when Pruitt and Giddens could be major players in a potential sign-and-trade with the Pacers to formally acquire Marquis Daniels.

Still Looking for that Inside Presence...

By: Greg Payne

Back on July 7, I wrote how we still need another big man who actually prefers to play in the paint.

If you think about it, of the three big men we currently have (Kendrick Perkins, Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace), two of them prefer hoisting jump shots, as opposed to dropping jump hooks. There's nothing wrong with it, because they've obviously made careers out of it. But even if we re-sign Glen Davis, he's still another forward who prefers the perimeter (he's mentioned extending his range to three-point nation).

What we still need, on top of a backup point guard, is a power forward who doesn't need to average 10 and 10, but rather someone who will bang inside, collect offensive and defensive rebounds, and, every once in a while, score a few points. The free agent market is pretty thin at that spot, but Leon Powe is still floating around (even if he won't be able to play until after the All-Star break).

Maybe this is the perfect way to have Leon return to town. If we head into the season without a forward of his tendencies, maybe management will realize we need someone of his caliber, and halfway through the year he'll be under contract with us again. But if not, we still need someone to at least try and fill that role.

Barnes Agrees to Join Magic

By: Greg Payne

Well, we found a quality backup for Paul Pierce, and now the Magic have found one for Vince Carter:

The Orlando Magic made another bold acquisition on Monday, agreeing in principle on a two-year deal with free-agent forward Matt Barnes.

Aaron Goodwin, the agent who represents both Barnes and All-Star Magic center Dwight Howard, confirmed the deal early Tuesday morning in a text message to the Orlando Sentinel.

"He has agreed to a two-year deal, and I believe that Dwight's recruitment of him truly sealed the deal," Goodwin wrote.

It wasn't any secret that I wanted Matt Barnes to join the Celtics, but with Danny Ainge's track record, I can't argue with the inevitable Daniels move just yet. Barnes appealed to me much more because, while he can still get to the rim like Daniels, he can also shoot much, much better from the perimeter.

The East sure is gearing up for a war.

Daniels Definitely Joining Celtics

By: Greg Payne

I know many of us figured this was set in stone by now, but I suppose the following officially confirms it. From NBA.com (a site we rarely use for basketball-related news for some strange reason...):

Former Indiana Pacers guard Marquis Daniels will play for the Boston Celtics next season.

Agent Glenn Schwartzman said on Saturday that his client has committed to go to Boston as a free agent or as part of a sign-and-trade deal with Indiana.

Schwartzman said both teams would prefer that the sign-and-trade works out, but the Celtics will use the biannual exception to sign Daniels if trade talks fizzle. Schwartzman wouldn't say which other players would be involved in a deal.

Now we just need to find out who we're actually going to give up to get him...

Pistons Still Interested in Glen Davis? Cleveland Goes After Moon

By: Greg Payne

I know the last player we want to read about right now is Glen Davis, simply because it seems he's all we read about these days, but according to Marc Spears, the Pistons apparently still have interested in him, despite already signing Chris Wilcox.

And the Cavaliers continue to try and improve:

The Cleveland Cavaliers have continued their offseason remodeling by signing restricted free agent Jamario Moon to an offer sheet, according to NBA front-office sources.

Full details of the offer sheet are unlikely to be known until Monday, when the contract is submitted to the league office. League rules dictate that offer sheets must span three years in length, but sources told ESPN.com that the deal is likely guaranteed for only the first two years.

Cleveland's really going for it, it seems. Whether it's taking advantage of Shaq's presence, showing LeBron they'll do what it takes to win or giving the city hope, they really mean business.

But then again, so do we.

Ford Joining Daniels?

There's an interesting rumor floating around Twitter that T.J. Ford could very well join Marquis Daniels in a sign-and-trade situation. It seems like we'd need to give up a few more players though.

Don't get too excited and don't read too much into it. For now it appears to be nothing more than a Twitter rumor...I'm just the messenger.

If anything breaks, I'll let you know.

The Cost of a Quality Bench

By: Greg Payne

There's nothing like a championship. There's nothing like a championship. There's nothing like a championship.

Right? Say it with me!

Because at certain times during an offseason or right around the trade deadline, we might need to mutter those five words to ourselves in a repetitive fashion. Because sometimes, another team might ask for what seems like too much. Or a player might ask for what seems like too much money. But there's nothing like a championship, so you go through with it anyway.

Such a scenario could be building up in front of our eyes in Boston.

Here's what sprang up on Chad Ford's Twitter page yesterday, in case you missed it:

Celts are hooking up with Marquis Daniels for their swingman. They've been trying to trade with Indy for Walker, Pruitt and Allen.

This is where you inhale sharply, making that strange hissing noise, while also sharply squinting the eyes. It's the classic, "That could be too much" face with patented hissing sound to boot.

Can we all agree we'd sacrifice Pruitt at this point? And we're all probably wishing that Indy would take Allen off of our hands. But Walker, too?

If this were that 'Price is Right' game (conveniently titled, "That's too much!"), we would see Walker's name thrown up there after the other two and scream with ferocious vocal intensity, "THAT'S TOO MUCH!"

But this isn't a game show. And there's nothing like a championship.

So maybe we give up Walker if it means bringing in a quality backup for Pierce? Finding the captain a backup was (depending on who you ask), priority number one, two or three heading into this offseason. And now that a quality player is on the table, shouldn't we make like a rattlesnake and strike?

Well, maybe not...Chad Ford added this bit after his first:

But if they can't do the deal, they'll just sign him to their $2 million bi-annual exception

That's certainly a better option, isn't it? Sure we wouldn't be able to use it after next season (it's not exactly, 'Use it or lose it', but instead, 'Use it AND lose it'). Because, if we're not meant to use it, why is it there in the first place? But our roster would also be jammed back with six players listed at 6'4 through 6'6. Ouch. Some will surely have to go.

I suppose I question a sign-and-trade with Walker in the mix because this isn't exactly Al Jefferson for Kevin Garnett. Sure, we don't regard Walker as highly as we regarded Big Al, but for all of the positives Daniels could bring, we've also heard various reports that question his consistency, focus and defensive intensity.

But if a deal for Daniels is done, then the quality bench we seek becomes that much more realistic. With Rasheed Wallace and Eddie House in the mix, we would have three of the backup five we seek. Throw in (most likely) a free agent point guard (Tyronn Lue, anyone?) and Glen Davis (seeing as how competition from other teams continues to diminish by the day) and suddenly the best starting five in the NBA can confidently hand the rock over to one of the best second units in the NBA.

So, if giving up Walker means bolstering our bench to better compete for a championship next season, I suppose we'll have to do it. We're playing for the moment, for the now. Just make it quick. And if it does happen, let's not dwell on it. Let's keep the focus on next season.

Because, after all, there's nothing like a championship.

Wilcox to the Pistons

From ESPN:

The
Detroit Pistons have agreed to a two-year deal with free agent Chris Wilcox, a source told ESPN.com.

The deal is for $6 million over the next two years according to sources.

Wilcox was signed as a replacement for Antonio McDyess, who left the team via free agency to sign with the Spurs.

That's one less team interested in Glen Davis...

A Lot on the Table for Daniels

Tony Allen's Out, Right?

By: Greg Payne

You know what my very first thought was when I saw Marquis Daniels committed to the Celtics?

'Goodbye Tony Allen'.

Surely there's no way the Celtics will willingly keep Allen around this season, right? Why wouldn't they keep him, you ask?

It could be the five inept seasons we've already suffered through with him deemed a "quality" backup. It could be his knack for injuring every part of his body. It could be his maddening inconsistency. It could be the fact that he just can't shoot from the perimeter. It could be the fact that Marquis Daniels has verbally committed to the Celtics. It could be that Allen might actually be used in a sign-and-trade to make the Daniels deal official. Or it could be the fact that both J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker are moving up the depth chart. And surely there would be NO need to keep all three on this season's roster.

We won't simply cut him because of the 2.5 million dollars we owe him this year, but it's almost guaranteed that we'll look to move him as early and often as possible.

Danny Ainge doesn't even have to admit he messed up on this one. We concluded that two or three years ago. Let's just move on. Plain and simple.

Some Quick Hits on Marquis Daniels

By: Greg Payne

If you're like me, you haven't been keeping a running tab on Marquis Daniels over the course of his NBA career. So, here's some information to help you get accustomed to his game:

ESPN Info Page

One bit you have to love from this: When Daniels is going good people say he's smooth ... and when he's not, people say he's coasting. One wonders if he could be a bit more engaged in the proceedings, especially on defense where he appears both soft and somewhat disinterested.

You see, this is what's great about having guys like Kevin Garnett and Rasheed Wallace on your team . You slack on 'D' and fifty 'F' bombs await you. Oh, he'll play defense, don't you worry.

And from the Herald:

He has also come in for some criticism. Two years ago, when Pacers president Larry Bird criticized his team for its inconsistency, he singled out Daniels.

“I look at Marquis Daniels and Marquis is not playing at a level I thought he would play at,” Bird told the Indianapolis media. “He’s been up and down.”

NBA Info Page

Wikipedia

I think everyone's excited about Daniels for two reasons:

1) We obviously needed a backup for Paul Pierce and he appears to be the man selected for the job. He can't shoot a jump shot to save his life, but his claim to fame is his slashing ability, which could easily compliment both Eddie House and Rasheed Wallace if they're roaming the perimeter.

2) We can finally talk about someone else besides Glen Davis.

Indiana free agent Marquis Daniels could be headed to the Boston Celtics by next week as part of a sign-and-trade deal still being discussed by the two teams, according to two NBA sources.

A Headline for Every Player on Our Roster...and Glen Davis

By: Greg Payne

Let's see if I can find some sort of headline about each player currently on our roster...

  • Paul Pierce did NOT get dunked on at his Nike Basketball Skills Academy
  • Glen Davis will not participate in Team USA Camp this summer. Also, are sign-and-trade scenarios being examined? Quite possibly...
  • Here's an old school interview with Kevin Garnett, courtesy of SLAM Online. It's a KG interview, so it's always an interesting read, regardless of the time period.
  • I just tried using "Bing" instead of "Google" for my searches. Yeah...Stick with Google.
  • Is anyone else tempted to say Brian Scalabrine will be traded before the halfway mark of next season? These expiring contracts will be more valuable than ever, especially with next summer looming...
  • And while we're on the topic of expiring contracts, Tony Allen has one as well. I Google News-ed TA and the first headline that came up was: Tony Allen - Secret Agent. I naturally assumed Celtic players would automatically come up when I typed their names in...Who knew TA was on the short list to replace Daniel Craig once James Bond reboots itself again in three years...On a positive note, TA is expected to make a full recovery from ankle surgery...
  • The Celtics have until August 1 to pick up Gabe Pruitt's option. Do you think they'll pick it up or look elsewhere for help at the backup point guard position?
  • Let's just say Bill Walker wasn't the only Walker who's worn a Celtics jersey trying to grab headlines the past two days...
  • How did Nick Fazekas end up with a higher scoring average than J.R. Giddens during the Orlando Summer League? How do these things happen? Oh well, Giddens still showed flashes. I think the Giddens/Walker decision is going to be much harder than we all think...
  • Eddie House: Thank you for picking up your player option and not costing us more money. In return, we should sign a quality backup point guard to make your life easier.
  • Lester Hudson's shot at making the team certainly took a hit when he broke the ring finger on his left hand. Do you guys think he'll be on the roster next season? Can we afford to back up Rondo with a rookie, when we can't even rely on Pruitt yet? Or should we just stuff Hudson in the D-League and try and build up some sort of farm system like the Red Sox?
I did it, right? That counts, right? Did I miss anyone?

Walker Cuffed

By: Greg Payne

From the Globe:

A day after a warrant was issued stemming from his $822,500 in gambling debts, former Celtic Antoine Walker was arrested Wednesday night at Harrah's Casino in Lake Tahoe, Nev., according to a report on RotoWorld.com.

Walker was led out of the casino in handcuffs, according to the report, and the ex-NBA forward is in Douglas County Jail. Bail was set at $87,000 He had reportedly been charged with failing to pay back $1 million worth of markers at Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood and Red Rock Resort casinos in Las Vegas.

I dread reporting the really, really bad stuff like this, but I suppose I couldn't really look past this one. I wish 'Toine the best. I hope he can work this out.

The Five Easiest Jobs in the NBA

By: Greg Payne

This struggling economy has shed light on various aspects of the working world, but one thing that hasn't changed is our ability to scope out all of the seemingly mindless positions out there that break the bank. Oh yeah, you know the jobs I'm talking about.

We see them everywhere. The occupations that don't even seem to require neurons. Maybe it's the corporate CEO who simply signs the checks and the papers, while the unappreciated work horses continue to be the ones who actually run the company.

Or maybe it's the life guard at your local town pool who makes double figures every hour and remarkably has a PENSION courtesy of the town, yet merely appears to sit in that white chair, working on his/her tan in those aviators. They won't save a single life all summer, but they'll proudly look like the newest model for Neutrogena at the very least.

Either way, the NBA is no different. We have the All-Stars and the Finals MVPs and the All-NBA Teamers. But if you look closely enough, you'll notice a few select players who truly live the good life. Whether that means winning, losing, making money or some sick combination of them all, they are indeed out there. Let's take a look at the top five players with the easiest jobs in the NBA.

5) Tracy McGrady:
You might question this one at first, but hear me out. T-Mac's never actually won anything besides scoring titles, and as his career becomes increasingly injury plagued (as are the careers of his key teammates), it's looking less and less like he'll actually escape the first round of the postseason. So, for the entire 82-game regular season he gets to unleash his truly ferocious talent (seriously, he could very well be the most talented guy in the league. I'm not saying the best. But he's gushing with raw basketball skill), while amping up the hopes of an entire fan base, before he expectantly allows those hopes to come crashing down the second his second or third seeded team crashes and burns at the hands of a much weaker seventh or six seeded nemesis. Enjoy the 82 games, Houston. Or at least the 53 T-Mac will actually play in.

Hey, who knew Vince Carter was synonymous for Tracy McGrady?

4) Damon Jones:
This certainly can't come as a surprise to anyone. Not even Jones, himself. When you're teammates with Dwyane Wade, LeBron James or Dirk Nowitzki, chances are you'll find yourself in some sort of backup role. And sure enough, Jones' preference for the three-point shot allowed him to find success alongside those three players during respective seasons of his career. Particularly when he played with Wade and James, Jones' sole responsibility was finding a spot somewhere beyond the three-point line and just firing away. Defense? Forget about it. Driving to the hole? Once in a blue moon.

And the best part? Jones completely understands this. How many times have we seen Jones give an overly confident interview, never taking himself too seriously. And to match, we have the various All-Star games he's not quite talented enough to compete in. So, instead, he shows up in elaborate suits and jackets, nearly stealing the show with his style alone. Jones is living the good life and he's completely aware of it.

3) Derek Fisher: While his daughter's cancer treatment needs to be taken seriously, I can still poke fun at his on-the-court responsibilities. They indeed are simple: Get ball over half court, give it to Kobe Bryant, watch Kobe score and occasionally knock down a clutch three-pointer of his own.

Oh, and win four championships in the process. Fisher's nerves of steal are what allow him to be on this list, because I easily could have slapped Mo Williams's name here, instead. But the overriding difference between Fisher and Williams? Fisher actually makes his three-pointers in the post season.

2) Marcin Gorat: I actually give Gortat credit for trying to skip out of Orlando in an attempt to play more in Dallas to "show the world" what he can do. However, after Orlando matched Dallas's offer of $34 million over five years, Gortat will indeed be returning to his backup role behind Dwight Howard next season. Now, it would seem almost definitive that Gortat would have to play more than the 12.6 minutes he averaged last season, right? $34 million for 12 minutes every game? That's roughly 15 trips up and down the court, based on the shot clock.

But if the minutes don't increase, he'll make nearly seven million dollars a year for working a total of 16.4 hours during the regular season! If you want to get technical, Gortat will make approximately 2.34 million dollars an hour for the next five years. Recession? What recession!

1) Your classic bench warmer: Every team's got one. Or two. Or maybe even three. They're the guys who might not even dawn the uniform on certain nights, especially during the postseason. But what do they get?

They get at least six figures a year, a sweet whip, smooth clothes, an all-access pass to the rest of the team that we on the outside covet, and most importantly, the very best seats in the house: Courtside. Right beside all of our favorite players. They're the guys who, when their obsessed friends/fans yell out, "Oh my gosh, Paul Pierce just sweat on me!", can retort with, "So what? He sweats on ME, every night!"

They're essentially the ultimate fans, because, after all, they're still technically on the team and want the team to succeed. But since they won't see a lick of playing time, they're stuck cheering all night. They get paid to practice and never once have to worry about the pressures of performing on the highest stage. Unless their team is riddled with injury. But if that does happen, expectations will be so low for the team, that the expected pressure would actually be eliminated anyway. It's the perfect system! They can't lose!

The NBA. Where indecently large sums of money are tossed around for next to no work happens!

Limited Options for Davis

From Mark Murphy, who would win every single day on Around the Horn because he appears to always have legitimate sources:

Though Davis is still hopeful of landing a mid-level-sized deal - one that starts at $5.8 million - the field is limited.

Detroit, a team with clear interest, has $3.2 million to offer, and is reportedly hesitant to send Davis an offer sheet with the knowledge that the Celtics will gladly match that amount. The Pistons, rather than have their cash placed in limbo by the seven-day period the Celtics would have to match the offer, are instead pursuing other options.

Three league sources close to negotiations confirmed that the Celtics explored a now-dead sign-and-trade deal that would have sent Davis to Miami in exchange for restricted free agent Jamario Moon. The plan never got off the ground because both young players fall into a dreaded category known as base-year compensation.

Put Your Personal Price Tag on Glen Davis

By: Greg Payne

Seeing as Glen Davis is garnering more press lately than anyone else, and seeing as the majority of that press deals specifically with his contract situation and how much he should make, let's have a little bit of fun with it.

I'm sure we all possess specific opinions about Big Baby and what he means to the Celtics, so in the comments section, I want you to list your personal Big Baby price tag, with a short explanation as to why you selected that specific price.

For example, here's what I would write:

If I were shopping for a Glen Davis, I would walk into Free Agents R Us with no more than four million dollars in my pocket.

If Davis were to be starting this season, we would easily expect the level of performance he displayed throughout the postseason and that would garner mid-level exception kind of money. I will give him that. However, I need to factor in the bench role he will assume, his minutes per game and his yet unproven ability to perform off the bench the same way he performed as a starter.

So, I would offer Davis 3.5 - 4 million dollars per year for two to three years and if his production comes close to matching what happened in last season's playoffs and it could be definitively concluded he would be a 15-6 type of guy with starter's minutes, I would drop a fairly hefty extension in his court after this next current contract is up. I would even be open to re-negotiating his deal midway through the contract, if his production warranted such a discussion.

Your turn. Enjoy.

A Vote of Confidence From Danny Ainge

By: Greg Payne

Marc Spears got in touch with the Celtics' general manager and he shed some light on the Celtics' recent offseason moves, Glen Davis and the chances of the Celtics taking home the championship next season:

“We like him and want him back,’’ Ainge said about Davis. “We’re trying to get Glen back. We’re planning on having Glen back.’’

“Our options are somewhat limited,’’ said Ainge, who is in Las Vegas for NBA competition committee meetings and to scout summer league play. “We still feel like we can help our team. We are exploring trades and free agency. Right now in free agency, there are still a lot of guys left.’’

“Our team is good,’’ Ainge said. “We need to get healthy. We added Rasheed. We are going to add players that are going to make us better.’’

On the feeling around town since the addition of Wallace last week, Ainge said: “I do feel an enthusiasm again. People are excited like they were two summers ago.’’

I'm excited like I was two summers ago. I'm downright giddy. Are you?

Marc Stein on Big Baby

By: Greg Payne

Here's the latest from Stein on Glen Davis's current situation. Pay close attention to the hefty money Detroit CANNOT offer Davis, thus giving us a chance to match if an offer is made:

The early sense I get is that the Mavericks have little interest in using their midlevel exception -- which is back in their possession after Orlando confirmed its intention to match a five-year, $34 million offer to Gortat -- to play the restricted free-agent game again with Boston's Glen Davis.

Detroit, by contrast, really covets Big Baby, whose modest $711,517 salary last season didn't stop him from stepping in admirably for the injured Kevin Garnett in the playoffs. The Pistons' problem is that their offer can start in only the $3 million range compared with $5.9 million in Dallas' case, raising the obvious fear that the rival Celtics could tie up the Pistons' money for seven days and then match.

The Hornets, meanwhile, haven't abandoned their Big Baby interest, but New Orleans has to shed some salary before it can do anything significant or construct a sign-and-trade deal that the Celtics would accept. The team considered most likely to trade for Tyson Chandler -- Phoenix -- just completed a buyout with Ben Wallace that rips up the contract New Orleans was hoping to score in exchange for Chandler to enable the Hornets to finally join this summer's action.

I find it interesting that Utah didn't appear somewhere in that report, considering they may lose out on Paul Millsap. So as of right now, I'd say it's between us and Detroit.

Iverson and Clippers in "Serious Talks"

From ESPN:

The makeover of the Los Angeles Clippers may include a former scoring champion.

The team is in "very serious" talks with Allen Iverson on a contract, the Los Angeles Times reported on Monday. ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported on Sunday that Memphis Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley, while still hopeful of signing Iverson, regards the Miami Heat as the "odds-on favorite" to land the former MVP. The Charlotte Bobcats were also reported to have interest.

Hey, if it makes life more difficult for the Lakers out west, I'm in favor of it.

Pistons Clearing Cap Space; Still Interested in Davis

By: Greg Payne

Detroit might now have to be deemed the favorite in the Glen Davis sweepstakes.

The Pistons traded guard Arron Afflalo, forward Walter Sharpe and cash to the Denver Nuggets today for a future second-round pick in a move that clears an estimated $1.8 million in salary cap space.

The team is reportedly interested in Celtics restricted free agent Glen Davis, a second-year power forward who is coming off a breakout postseason run when he replaced an injured Kevin Garnett.

Well since Davis is a restricted free agent, we have a security blanket of sorts, as we have the option to match any offer he receives from another team.

Whether or not the Celtics elect to match any offer if Davis signs an offer sheet with another team, will be their choice. Such a situation actually just arose between the Dallas Mavericks and Orlando Magic, concerning backup center Marcin Gortat. Orlando elected to match Dallas' $34 million offer, so Gortat will be backing up Howard for another season.

So, these things can happen. We'll have to wait and see.

Parker to the Cavs

By: Greg Payne

Anthony Parker is a Cavalier.

Parker, 34, signed a two-year deal worth about $6 million. He averaged 10.7 points and 3.4 assists in 80 games for the Toronto Raptors last season. At 6-foot-6, he provides the type of length the Cavaliers have been searching for in a perimeter defender.

Remember how Cleveland won 66 games last season? Remember how Cleveland won 66 games last season with Ben Wallace at center and Sasha Pavlovic at small forward doing next to nothing for them all year?

Remember how Cleveland traded Wallace and Pavlovic to Phoenix for Shaquille O'Neal, thus upgrading themselves at the center position? And in the process pushed Zydrunas Ilgauskas to the bench, giving their second unit a formidable inside presence.

Okay, so now they sign Parker to fill the small forward spot and suddenly they have legitimacy at two positions they lacked in last season, when they won 66 games. Just throwing it out there. It's on next season. Are you pumped for the 2009-2010 NBA year? Do you understand how epic it will all be? Get loud.

Get Outside and Enjoy the Beautiful Weather

By: Greg Payne

Well, it's Monday morning and there's really not much going on in the basketball world. Rasheed Wallace is a Celtic. Grant Hill is not. There are no real updates available on any other free agents the Celtics could potentially be interested in. We know Tyronn Lue's name has been mentioned off and on and Jamario Moon could be a possibility as well.

Other than that, there's really not much to report right now, which is why I've decided to act as a weatherman instead. Yes, if you live in Massachusetts like I do, you've been waiting for a day like today and a week like the one we're about to have. The forecast calls for sunny skies with a high around 80 degrees. That trend should continue through the remainder of this week, as well.

So, with that in mind, get out of work as early as you can, forget about reading blogs and websites in the comfort of your home and get outside and enjoy this weather. Hit up the beach, jump in the pool, throw the sprinkler on for the kids or get some exercise. Just get outside this week. The Celtics will still be here when you get back. And so will I.

Utah a Possible Destination for Glen Davis?

By: Greg Payne

Here's the new player in the Big Baby sweepstakes:

If the Jazz don't match the four-year, $32 million offer sheet backup power forward Paul Millsap signed Friday with Portland, they have at least one viable alternate option.

He's Boston Celtics restricted free agent power forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis, and he'd come to Utah without whining about big bucks.

"By all means we would be interested," Davis' agent, John Hamilton, said Saturday.

"This (Utah) was one of the teams that was very interested in him when he was coming out (of LSU in 2007), and in fact we thought he'd be drafted by them. So, absolutely: We'd be interested."

Speaking of Millsap not returning to Utah:

The Portland Trail Blazers signed restricted free agent forward Paul Millsap to an offer sheet Friday.

The Utah Jazz have seven days to match the offer. The terms were not disclosed by the Blazers because of team policy.

Not too much has been released lately about where the Celtics stand with Davis and how often they've been discussing a new contract and all that jazz (no pun intended), but with Utah able to offer the mid-level exception, it could be argued that they are the new favorites here.

Detroit can also offer Baby the MLE, so if he does in fact return to Boston, we know it won't be for they money, unless we elect to match any offer he does in fact receive.
