Tony Mejia of Pro Basketball News gives his take on the top point guards in the league. Rajon Rondo came in 8th, behind Paul, Parker, Williams, Billups, Harris, Rose and Nash.
Here's his take:
After nearly averaging a triple-double (16.9 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 9.8 apg) over 14 playoff games, the 23-year-old Rondo seemed poised to rake in the spoils over the summer, only to have Danny Ainge go public with an on-air admonishment on WEEI, questioning his commitment and maturity. It will be interesting to see how he starts the season, but given his feisty, competitive temperament, expect him to come out with a chip on his shoulder. A restricted free agent come summer, improving his jumper and making smarter decisions could make him a very rich man.
I'd personally put Rondo ahead of Nash because of the age factor and because Nash's defense will begin to get spotty, if it hasn't already. And my only qualm with Rose coming in ahead of Rondo is that Rajon blatantly outplayed him in the opening round of last year's postseason.
Here are the stats for both players from that seven-game series:
Rondo: 19.4 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 11.6 apg, 2.7 spg, 2.14 TO/game
Rose: 19.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 6.4 apg, 0.6 spg, 5.0 TO/game
Personally, I'm still anxious to see what will happen to Rondo once this whole 'Big Three' era is behind us. Rondo essentially became 'the guy' in the playoffs, proving that he could carry a team by putting up monster numbers in every major statistical category. I'd love to see what Rondo could do with 82 games of being 'the guy'.
