Hudson and Sweetney Get Deals

By: Greg Payne

It appears as if Lester Hudson's hard work has paid off. From Mark Murphy:

Rookie Lester Hudson, who has worked out patiently all summer without a contract, walked onto the floor with a new one-year deal in hand.

“I was very anxious about it,” he said. “But it’s a great feeling. I got to work out with all of the guys on this team.”

Well, not so fast. According to telegram.com, Mike Sweetney received a deal as well.

The Celtics begin training camp with 16 players, one over the maximum, after the signings of second-round pick Lester Hudson and free agent forward Michael Sweetney. Still recovering from offseason foot surgery, Tony Allen isn’t ready to go full tilt yet.
According to both reports, neither deal is guaranteed, which means, while Hudson has obviously made a nice impression, he still has to play his way onto this roster throughout training camp. But it's certainly a nice step for the rookie, especially given the talent he has to compete against on this roster.

I am psyched for Hudson but am a little puzzled by the offer to Mike Sweetney. Seems redundant with Glen Davis.

I would have thought they may give a tall man like Swift, or even Fazekas a try instead

Is this a clue about the future of TA?

Who knows with TA these days. It's unpredictable. He shouldn't even be on the roster anymore. Idk why I wrote that "I support Tony Allen" piece. Horrible decision haha.

As for Sweetney, I was surprised as well. Even with them signing Hudson, I'm almost surprised they didn't sign another vet point guard over Sweetney, just in case, you know?

You are right. That makes the Sweetney pick even stranger. Maybe they are thinking bulk against bulk when meeting the Cav's and Shaq? But we still have Big Baby unless they see him as a better matchup for others. Who knows?

It seems that Dickau and Jackson were the only two they were at least mildly interested in at this time.

Lets hope Hudson takes away those concerns

Yeah I really want to see some video of Hudson at training camp and how he looks with the backup units.

At the same time I can see this turning into a Brandon Wallace type of situation. Remember him from two years ago? I think we really liked him as well, but he just couldn't make it in '07-'08.

Yep, I was a HUGE Brandon Wallace fan

Guess it is the underdog factor. Can't help pulling for these young guys to be an added bonus to the team that no one counted on.

Yeah and having promising young guys always gives us an underlying sense of hope for the future. And it makes preseason that much more enjoyable when they're just let off the leash for a few games haha

I agree that picking up Sweetney is kind of strange ... even if he gets back to where he was a few years back, I don't think he fits in well. Too slow on D.

Back in the day he had some amount of post presence, but did not have the passing skills for a quick passing offense like the C's.

Another big body I guess is the thinking. But would rather it had been someone more mobile.

Yeah airbeds, I agree. I think I remember him playing for Chicago (I don't know THAT much about him) and he was actually pretty steady for them.

I'm glad you brought up defense, since it'll be such a staple of this year's team. If he can't keep up with the team defensively throughout training camp, he has virtually no shot of making the team.
