Bring on the Backup Point Guards

(Steve Neimand)

By: Greg Payne

If you're like me, you've patiently been waiting for news to drop concerning the backup point guard position. For the past few weeks we've been assuming many things: Will we sign Lester Hudson? Will we just go with Eddie House and Marquis Daniels? Will we wait until after training camp or even preseason to see if any quality vets don't make the rosters of other teams? Will we sign a vet before training camp?

Then, a report surfaced that guys like Tyronn Lue -the type of quality vet we could be looking for - would have to wait until Ramon Sessions and Allen Iverson were taken care of. Well sure enough, Sessions signed an offer sheet from Minnesota and Iverson agreed to terms with Memphis.

Mere hours after Iverson made it official with the Grizzlies, both Marc Spears and the Boston Globe reported that the Celtics were inviting former Celtic (and veteran point guard) Dan Dickau to training camp.

Then this popped up on Spears' Twitter last night:

Celtics considering, but not committed to, adding a third point guard. Possibles include rookie Hudson, vets Ty Lue, Mike Taylor and Dickau

Suddenly, it looks like we have legitimate options to choose from (if the above players are indeed interested. And seeing as Dickau's been invited, we drafted Hudson and Lue's one of Kevin Garnett's good friends, it's safe to say most of them are). Since NBA teams can only have a maximum of 15 players on their roster and the Celtics already have 14 spots filled, this could turn into something of a battle for that final spot. Or Danny Ainge could essentially say forget about it and start the season with 14 guys and possibly pick someone else up along the way.

Either way though, if Spears' report is indeed factual, I see it as a good thing that we have that many options. Rather than possibly resorting to a guy because he's the only one there (it's rare for Danny to do that anyway) this scenario gives us a better opportunity to find a player who fits into our system and meshes better with the second unit.

When Dickau was here I remember him being super soft on D.

I admit to hoping for Hudson to sign and get his feet we in the D-League.

I am unfamiliar with Taylor.

Hard to even guess as to where DA is leaning, or maybe right now he is not leaning anywhere at this point lol

Haha yeah you're absolutely right, it's tough to gauge anything right now.

I've been saying Lue since the very first days of the offseason, and as much as I honestly do like Hudson (whenever we draft someone I adopt a distinct liking towards him), I'm all about winning this year's title, as I'm sure you are as well, C2K. Certainly not trying to say you aren't. Like you said, I would love for Hudson to get the chance to prove himself.

But if Lue can help us win more than Hudson can, I have to lean towards Lue. But if Dickau or Taylor or whoever is right for the job and it's clear cut, I'll be satisfied with that.

Good points. I have that "loyal disease" as well so Hudson is my favorite. lol

What is the background on this Mike Taylor? Who did he play for last?

He played a year at Iowa State...looks like he last played in the D-League during the 2007-2008 season for the Idaho Stampede, so he isn't really a veteran by any means.

It's surprising to me, only because, you have a young guy in Hudson...so why potentially bring in another young guy, you know? I would have figured Hudson would have been the choice if they were indeed going young.

Nothing's official though, so we'll have to wait and see I suppose.
